Founded in 1908, the Roma Bottling Works distributed beer, Virginia Dare Ginger Ale, and Ideal Beverages across Pittsburgh.
Their flagship product was Skipper Pop — a homegrown Pittsburgh soda bottled right here on Colwell Street. Skipper was a fixture in corner stores and homes across the city for decades, a genuinely local pop in a town that took its pop seriously.
In 2001, Pittsburgh architects Tai + Lee converted the Roma Bottling Works into eight residential lofts, preserving the original industrial character while reimagining the building for modern living.
Colwell Street sits in the Crawford Roberts neighborhood, tucked between Uptown, the Bluff, and the Lower Hill District — one of Pittsburgh's most historically significant urban corridors. The area is undergoing steady reinvestment while holding onto the texture of its past.
PPG Paints Arena is an eight-minute walk. Downtown Pittsburgh is five minutes by car. Duquesne University and UPMC Mercy Hospital are both within easy walking distance. The Strip District — Pittsburgh's food and market corridor — is a short drive up the river.
Redhawk Coffee is around the corner. Merante Brothers Market, a Pittsburgh institution, is nearby for everyday essentials. The neighborhood connects directly to major Port Authority bus routes, and the city's bike network continues to expand through the area.
